The original Note's highlight was "S Pen," a software-stylus combo that lets you write and draw more accurately with pressure sensitivity. Samsung updated S Pen for the new Note, making it easier to write with by adding a variety of nib sizes, and now you don't actually have to touch the stylus to the screen. "Air View" lets you browse by hovering the pen over the display. That means you can do some cool tricks, like record everything that happens on your screen -- a moving screenshot -- perfect for people doing demos on how to set up a website or install a program. In addition, you can write notes on photos and images, making the Note a full-fledged digital notepad.

There's also an 8-megapixel camera, which captures clear, vivid photos and records 1080p high-definition video -- on par with the Note, but it's not as exceptional as the rest of the Note 2's features. A second 1.9-megapixel front-facing lens is functional for video chat, but not especially noteworthy.
The Note is also one of the first devices to run on Android 4.1, dubbed "Jelly Bean." Bolstered by Google's Project Butter, Android is now smoother and easier to navigate than before. It's also the prettiest version yet, but Google's operating system continues to feel like revamps rather than innovative new interfaces -- it suffers from generic-itis. Despite innovations like Google Now, which now grabs flight data, weather reports, appointments and even sports scores, the lack of mind-blowing features puts it behind rivals iOS -- and even Windows 8 -- on innovation
